Chapter Fifteen
Jackson
I thought about going after Jessica. There was more I wanted to tell her, more I wanted to explain. It was so hard to talk to an outsider about our innermost secrets though. I wondered if I was betraying fatherâs wishes. He had brought her here and kept the secret. I had let it slip, but what choice did I have? She had seen so much already, and her sister was involved. I know I would want to know if I were in her shoes.
But she asked for time alone, so I let her leave. I stayed at the graves, looking down at Mom and Dad. Momâs killer was finally at rest, but strangely it left me feeling hollow. I didnât feel any accomplishment or any satisfaction at all. It didnât bring her back. I sensed movement nearby. When I looked up, I saw a golden wolf standing in amongst the trees. For how long he had been there I did not know. The wolf padded towards me, emerging from the leafy canopy, and began to shift. The air seemed to shimmer around it as it turned into a man, and then Hunter was standing before me, his face stern and resolute as always.
âSo, you told her then.â
âI did, just as we agreed.â
Hunter curled his lips. The agreement hadnât exactly been mutual. I had forced the issue, and like with everything else Hunter had only gone along with it because at the moment, I still had the position of the alpha.
âAnd how did she take it?â Hunter asked.
âAbout as well as could be expected. For a moment there I thought she was going to throw up, but in truth I think sheâs more worried about her sister. Once we find out what happened to Tina then we might want to talk to her properly.â
âDo you think sheâs going to tell the world about us?â
It was all I could do to stop from rolling my eyes. âSheâs not like that, Hunter. If you took the time to know her then youâd understand.â
âI do know her. I know that she stole your bike and went to speak to Willie alone despite agreeing that she would stay here. I donât think sheâs the type to do as sheâs told.â He smirked at this. âIn fact, she sounds like someone I used to know.â I followed his gaze to my motherâs grave. My skin crawled with revulsion every time I thought about Hunter and the way he so casually declared his love for my mother, as though he deserved special treatment because he loved a woman who never loved him back.
âYou need to let go of her,â I said through gritted teeth.
âI loved her long before you came into this world Jackson, and you canât tell me to stop mourning her.â
âSheâs my Mom. Itâs disrespectful to her and to Dad for you to keep going on about her like this. She never loved you, Hunter.â
âYou donât know the story, Jackson. You donât know what would have happened if I had gotten there before Abraham.
